The newest F16 performance beach cat the Falcon debuts at the Tradewinds
regatta in Islamorada, FL. With changes to the hull form to improve
its rough condition handling and crew weight carrying ability, the
newest design hit the water for its first sail ever at this event.
Despite some first outing rigging issues (knots) and an unfortunate
run it with a sea turtle, the Falcon won the event and the F16 Mid-winters
crown. Although the conditions did not tend to the extreme to test
the limits of the new design, those who saw and sailed the new boat
came away more than favorably impressed.

The 36th running of Hagar the Horrible. The 30+ mile distance run
was attended by a number of F16, F18 and I20 spin rigged boats,
running from Kelly Park down to the 520 bridge, back up into the
Space center 405 bridge, back to 520 and then finish. In the Falcon’s
second sail, they managed to fend off a very competitive fleet of
boats, narrowly missing line honors to the I20 by mere seconds,
correcting out first by a large margin.

The third running of the Space Coats 45. A 45 mile distance race
up the intercoastal waterway. Teaming up with Terry Back (recently
returned from a medical forced hiatus from sailing), the Falcon
makes its third appearance on the course. Starting out light and
building through the day, the racers saw a wide variety of conditions
and close racing was had with a pack of boats, I20, F18 and F16
swapping places on a number of occasions. Eaking out enough of a
lead as the wind built on the way back up wind, the Falcon was able
hold on for line honors as well as over all corrected winner of
the event.

The Gulfport Invitational. Formally the F16 / A Class invitational
that has now been opened to all beach cats. 19 F16’s showed
up on the beach (2 local boats ran into conflicts and did not race
so 17 hit the line on Saturday) This was a huge step for the class,
with this being one of the largest attended F16 events in history,
and bodes well for the upcoming Global Challenge that will be taking
place at the same location in November of this year. Filling out
the fleet on the start, the F18s joined in adding to the competitiveness
and camaraderie on the course. Several of the recently delivered
Vipers were in attendance as well as a variety of Blades and Taipans.
Saturdays racing went from heavy to light with huge fluctuations
in wind direction and strength playing across the course. Patience
was the name of the game as lead changes were often and drastic.
Saturdays final results had the top 5 racers all within a point
of one another and when the throw out was considered, another 3-4
boat boats all were within striking distance of an event win. Sundays
forecast looked good but never quite lived up to its billing. Leaving
the beach in a fresh breeze, it slowly dropped throughout the day.
Although never strong its direction and velocity was significantly
less variable than the previous day. Sailing very fast were a number
of the uni crews. Sailing right with them and maintaining a 1st
and a 2nd in Sunday’s races was the Falcon being sailed 2
up. This solidified the rankings for the event and provided the
Falcon’s 4th win in its 4 outings since its debut at the Tradewinds
in January.
